Seroquel Warning
PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR CASE
On January 30, 2004, AstraZenica notified doctors that the label for Seroquel was being changed. The letter addresses Label changes in the WARNINGS section, advising that Hyperglycemia, in some cases extreme and associated with ketoacidosis or hyperosmolar coma or death, has been reported in patients treated with atypical antipsychotics, including Seroquel. Epidemiological studies suggest an increased risk of treatment-emergent hyperglycemia-related adverse events in patients treated with the atypical antipsychotics. Any patient treated with atypical antipsychotics should be monitored for symptoms of hyperglycemia including polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, and weakness. In some cases, hyperglycemia has resolved when the atypical antipsychotic was discontinued; however, some patients required continuation of anti-diabetic treatment despite discontinuation of the suspect drug. Seroquel was approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of schizophrenia and manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. However, physicians have prescribed Seroquel for a number of other psychological concerns.

Seroquel Side Effects
Serious side effects can occur with any antipsychotic medication. A rare, but potentially fatal, condition referred to as neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) has been reported. Another condition associated with antipsychotic medications is tardive dyskinesia, which can cause potentially irreversible, involuntary movements. There have been reports of disorders of elevated blood sugar, including diabetes mellitus, associated with SEROQUEL and other drugs in its class.
